Civil rights activists on Tuesday failed to convince a federal appeals court to reconsider a ruling that could sharply curtail lawsuits enforcing a landmark voting rights law's protections against racial discrimination.
The full 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected, opens new tab a request by the Arkansas Public Policy Panel and the Arkansas State Conference NAACP to reconsider a 2-1 ruling by a panel of judges holding that only the government and not private plaintiffs can pursue cases enforcing Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
There are a number of freshmen showing out in the NCAA this season. This past weekend, it was Hannah Hidalgo.
Hidalgo played a big part in No. 15 Notre Dame’s takedown of No. 8 UConn, the Irish’s first top-10 win of the season. The freshman dropped a career-high 34 points, marking twice this season that she’s scored more than 30 points against top-10 opponents.
It was also a single-game scoring record for a Notre Dame freshman.
UConn head coach Geno Auriemma gave Hidalgo props following the loss, but also chalked it up to a poor defensive performance by the Huskies.
Aryna Sabalenka won her second Grand Slam title over the weekend, taking home her second-straight Australian Open championship.
Sabalenka is only the second women’s player in the Open era to win her first two singles titles at the Australian Open, following Victoria Azarenka.
She won the title in the same way she dominated the tournament – in straight sets. Zheng Qinwen proved to be no match for Sabalenka, who’s closest match was a 7-6(2), 6-4 semifinal win over Coco Gauff.
