In many parts of Africa, it is not uncommon for young girls to share sanitary materials, usually repurposed cloth, with their mothers or other women in their households. Even with thorough washing, this practice poses a risk of transmitting venereal diseases. Equally troubling, a lack of personal sanitary products means many of these girls are absent from school for several days each month during menstruation.

Silence often surrounds these issues in Africa, overshadowed by the more visible crises of hunger, violence, and disease. However, the well-being and education of girls and young women are fundamental to the overall health and prosperity of communities.
